My name is Lori and I am the Assistant Training and Curriculum Specialist for the Navy Child and Youth Program! Often I hear from other parents and colleagues about how the work/school week flew by and sometimes they are not even sure how they got to Friday. With that being said, making connections with the ones we love sometimes unintentionally slip by. In our house, things definitely get crazy with all of activities that we have to do throughout the week and sometimes, finding a time to talk and connect with my daughter can be tricky. I have found that one way to ensure we stay connected is by having dinner together every night. During this time, we talk about what happened during her day, good things and bad as well as about anything that may be on her mind. Dinnertime can be a great time to do this! According to Anne Fishel, Co-founder of The Family Dinner Project and Professor at Harvard Medical School, she says that there are benefits for children who have dinner together with their families. These benefits range from Academic including expanding kids vocabularies, earning higher achievement scores, and making better grades at school to helping children socially and emotionally. She found that for teens, family dinnertime “may ward off suicidal thoughts, depression and eating disorders”.
